Application Engineer – Fiber Laser Systems
RS-13123-DAV-7
Detroit, MI
Our client is a leading provider of advanced metal fabrication equipment, delivering high-precision fiber laser cutting systems, CNC plasma tables, tube and pipe profiling solutions, and fully automated cutting technologies. Their systems serve industries such as aerospace, automotive, construction, heavy equipment, and custom fabrication. Known for precision, reliability, and innovation, they integrate software, motion control, optics, and automation into turnkey cutting solutions that maximize productivity and cut quality.
Position Overview:
This role is an excellent fit for two types of candidates:
- Experienced field professionals who have worked as Application Engineers, Field Engineers, Service Technicians, or Service Engineers, and want to continue growing their technical expertise in fiber laser systems.
- Hands-on shop-floor professionals who have developed strong knowledge of fabrication, CNC equipment, or laser cutting in a production setting and are now seeking to transition into an outside travel role with a clear path to greater responsibility.
As an Application Engineer, you will install, commission, and support advanced fiber laser cutting systems, while also training customers and providing applications expertise. The position blends technical installation with customer-facing applications support, offering exposure to both engineering and real-world fabrication environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Install, configure, and commission fiber laser cutting systems at customer facilities, including CNC controls, motion systems, optics, and auxiliary equipment
- Perform optical alignment, cutting head calibration, and system optimization for maximum performance and safety compliance
- Provide applications engineering support, including developing cutting parameters for mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and reflective alloys, as well as tube and profile cutting
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, optical, and software issues (laser sources, drives, chillers, motion/servo systems)
- Deliver customer training on machine operation, maintenance, CAD/CAM nesting software, and applications best practices
- Collaborate with engineering and product teams to feed field insights into system improvements
- Travel regularly across North America for installations, service visits, and applications support
Qualifications:
- Experience with fiber laser systems, including installation, commissioning, and applications support
- Knowledge of CNC controls, motion/drive systems, CAD/CAM nesting software, and automation integration
- Strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, and optical systems
- Understanding of material properties and how laser cutting parameters impact cut quality (HAZ, kerf width, edge finish)
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical/electrical schematics and optical diagrams
- Strong communication skills for customer interaction, documentation, and training
- Willingness to travel extensively for field assignments
Preferred Background:
- Experience with bevel cutting heads, 3D/tube cutting, or advanced motion/gantry systems
- Familiarity with gas mixing, beam quality optimization, and advanced optics calibration
- Preventive maintenance and laser safety training background
Compensation & Benefits:
- $90,000 base salary
- Performance bonus based on successful installations, customer satisfaction, and service metrics
- Full benefits package (health, dental, vision, retirement)
- Car allowance for field travel
- All travel expenses covered (airfare, lodging, meals, incidentals)
